Rainy Seattle!

Over the weekend, we were provided with the opportunity to visit Seattle.  On route to Seattle, we visited Olympia at the OSPI which I found extremely interesting. It was beneficial to understanding how assessment works at state level, and how the state actively confronts the opportunities and challenges of a diverse nation.  I was particularly impressed with the inclusion of ELL endorsements within the teaching qualifications in Washington state and believe it should be compulsory within the UK system also.

Secondly, we stopped at Evergreen State University for a talk and presentation.  I found the differing type of assessment structure at Evergreen intriguing and initially, was a little sceptical of the no-grades approach.  However, after listening to the logic behind the system and to the success stories of some of the students, I'd love the opportunity to study at a similar institution!

In Seattle, we were provided with City passes which we made full use of! I managed to squeeze in a visit to the aquarium, art museum, science fiction and music museums, a very cold, wet and windy trip up the space needle, visits to the freemont and pike market places, a tour of the many shops the city has to offer and a cruise around the harbour. I ate a range of foods including thai, seafood, italian and my favourite - a trip to the Russian bakery! A weekend packed full of activities, and the rain even made it feel like home!
