The Domino Project

The visit to the Domino Preschool Project was an invaluable insight to the barriers faced daily for children with Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome. We were able to view the children and learning assistants from an observation room, whilst Shira Ackerman (the director and class teacher) provided us with some background knowledge on the condition, the children and the project. The group then asked questions for around an hour which was fascinating, productive and eye-opening.

I found Shira’s passion for the care and development of the children infectious, and enjoyed the discussions surrounding the importance to build connections with the home whilst creating an inclusive environment in the classroom. I have carried out a placement in the UK where I had the opportunity to work with a child of autism which I enjoyed immensely. Listening and seeing the work of this project has encouraged me to become more involved with similar projects when I return to the UK.
